Tamarind Sherbet Recipe

Tamarind sherbet is a refreshing summer drink packed with intense spices. It’s said to quench thirst effectively.Tamarind is a tropical fruit with high nutritional value. Tamarind is one of the most preferred ingredients in street foods in India. After being dried, tamarind can be consumed as a spice. Tamarind spice can be used in soups and salads.

 

Ingredients:

  • 200 grams dried tamarind
  • 2 liters water
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 cloves
  • 1/2 sliced lemon
  • 1 piece grated ginger (optional)
  • 1 star anise
  • Fresh mint leaves (for garnish)
  • Pomegranate seeds (for garnish)

Instructions:

Preparation:

Start by removing the shells from the tamarinds, then break them into small pieces.
Place the cleaned tamarinds in a pot and add 2 liters of water.
Place the pot on the stove and let the tamarind boil in the water over medium heat for 10-15 minutes.

Infusion Stage:

After the water boils, remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
Once cooled, place the tamarind mixture in the refrigerator and let it rest for 5 hours. It’s recommended to keep it in the fridge overnight.
Allowing it to sit overnight enhances the intensity of the flavor.

Sherbet Making:

Strain the infused tamarind using a sieve into another pot.
To the strained liquid, add sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, grated ginger (if using), and star anise.
Place the pot with the ingredients on the stove and boil the mixture over medium heat. After boiling, let it simmer for another 15 minutes on low heat, then remove from the stove.
Add lemon juice to the pot and mix well.

Serving:

Let the sherbet cool down.
Once cooled, place the sherbet in the refrigerator and chill.
If desired, you can add ice for extra chill.

Serving Suggestion:

Pour the tamarind sherbet into glasses. Garnish with mint leaves and pomegranate seeds, and optionally add a spoonful of honey.
You can also serve by placing a slice of lemon on the rim of the glass.
